The Mexico Solidarity Network began in May of 1998, following a national meeting held in Washington, DC, and attended by 250 solidarity activists to discuss the US response to the Acteal massacre. We formed an initial steering committee of 18 organizations, and Tom Hansen was asked to serve as the first Executive Director.

We, representatives of the civil organizations that are members of the Peace Network in Chiapas, express our profound concern regarding the evictions that occurred on 21 and 22 January 2010 in indigenous communities in the region of Montes Azules, and we announce that we will be prepared for the possibility of more eviction-operations as announced by different sources.

Adolfo Guzmán Ordaz, a community Indigenous rights activist in Chiapas state, southern Mexico, has received death threats after he filed a complaint against police. He has reported the threats to the authorities, but so far the authorities have made inadequate efforts to protect him.

In previous days his house has been raided by the Chiapas State Police. The threat is linked and was made in response to his involvement in the criminal investigation into the raid, abuse of authority and torture.

This Human Rights Center has received information from adherents to the Other Campaign from the ejido of Jotolá, municipality of Chilón, about the imminent risk of aggression by members of the Organization for the Defense of Indigenous and Peasant Rights (OPDDIC from its Spanish acronym), and possibility of irreparable injury to their lives and physical integrity.

An employee of the Human Rights Center Fray Bartolome de Las Casas (Frayba) was brutally attacked on September 18th. The attack occurred in Ejido Jotola, in the municipality of Chilon. The attackers were armed and are members of OPDDIC – the Organization for the Defense of the Rights of Indigenous and Campesinos. Today, June 19th, at approximately 3:15pm, Diego Cadenas Gordillo, director of this Human Rights Center, was driving his vehicle on the way to his house in this city. He encountered a pickup truck parked on the opposite side of the street and noticed that the lens of a photographic camera was sticking out of the driver’s side, focused on him. Seconds after passing the truck, he heard that the camera was activated on two occasions.
