In previous days his house has been raided by the Chiapas State Police. The threat is linked and was made in response to his involvement in the criminal investigation into the raid, abuse of authority and torture.

It is important to consider and remember the basic context of a human rights defender, as described in the Declaration, on the right and duty of individuals, groups and institutions to promote and protect human rights and fundamental civil liberties acknowledged in “the United Nations Declaration on Human Rights Defenders”; its first article states: “Everyone has the right, individually and in association with others, to promote and to strive for the protection and realization of human rights and fundamental freedoms at the national and international levels.”

The Centre for Human Rights Fray Bartolomé de la Casas A.C. (FRAYBA) condemns the murder of human rights defender Mariano Abarca Roblero and seeks justice in the form of a thorough investigation, that delivers effective and objective results, and that all the perpetrators be punished, including both the actual murderers and the instigators of this crime. Similarly the authorities responsible for guaranteeing the life and personal integrity of Mariano Abarca Roblero should be held accountable for failing to protect him.

This Human Rights Center has received information from adherents to the Other Campaign from the ejido of Jotolá, municipality of Chilón, about the imminent risk of aggression by members of the Organization for the Defense of Indigenous and Peasant Rights (OPDDIC from its Spanish acronym), and possibility of irreparable injury to their lives and physical integrity.
